Local Celebrity: Sonics Guy

Tacomas Kris Brannon, known around the Northwest as Sonics Guy, who has been voted numerous times by South Sound magazine readers as their favorite local celebrity, died in February. The 47-year-old Brannon famously sported green and gold Seattle SuperSonics gear since the team left town for Oklahoma City in 2008, rallying to bring an NBA team back to Seattle. He was gracious, friendly, and had a big presence, willing to pose for selfies with his fans. Everything is Temporary at Ephemeral Tattoo – INKED

Tattoos that fade away seem like the stuff of science fiction, a quirk of the wizarding world, or, to be more realistic, a poorly done tattoo. Growing up, if you wanted a tattoo you wouldnt be taking to the grave, you needed a pack of temporary tattoos from the nearest Walmart or from one of those 25 cent vending machines where every toy comes in a plastic egg. At Ephemeral, what used to be science fiction has become a reality, and a wet cloth or sponge is no longer needed to get the temporary tattoo of your dreams.

Ephemeral Tattoos in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, is the first tattoo studio of its kind, offering clients beautifully designed tattoos by actual tattoo artists without the long-term commitment. You read that right, real tattoos that are designed to fade away on purpose. This studio just might be every parents' collective dream.

CEO Jeff Liu and co-founder Josh Sakhai designed the studio to fight against the taboo nature of tattoos they grew up with in their households. "This company extends from a real desire to bridge the gap between conventional ink and temporary tattoos, making the artistry more accessible," Liu says. However, it was watching the painful ordeal of seeing a team member getting his tattoo removed that set the flame for Ephemeral alight. "What if tattoo ink was made to fade? The full tattoo experience minus the permanence?"

"The concept was based on microparticle encapsulation technology that was already well researched, so we believed that we could bring our vision of made-to-fade tattoos to the world," Sakhai explains. Two of Ephemerals five co-founders have PhDs in Chemical Engineering from NYU and started working on the formula back in 2014. After six years of research, 50 different formulations, and hundreds of tattoos, the ink was finally ready.

What makes traditional tattoos permanent is your body's inability to remove the large ink particles from the skin. The moment you get a tattoo, your body starts fighting the ink because it views it as a foreign object. With traditional ink, the molecules are too large to be broken down by the body, your body effectively "walls off" the area, and the ink stays put. Ephemeral's ink is designed to be broken down over time because of the smaller ink particles that work with the body's natural removal processes. Ephemeral's ink is composed of medical-grade, bio-absorbable, and biocompatible polymers with high-quality pigments that are routinely used in food and cosmetics.

"Ephemeral tattoo ink particles break down over time and become small enough to be removed by the body, Sakhai says. The rate at which this happens varies from person to person.The average rate for an Ephemeral tattoo to fade is currently nine to 15 months and depends on a large number of factors: skin type, placement, size and aftercare. "Fading looks a bit different on every one since everyone's skin is unique."

The studio fully embraces the "nothing lasts forever" mantra that Gen-Z has relished in recent years, proudly displaying "Regret Nothing" on its storefront and website. Even the name "Ephemeral" itself ties to the tattoos' fleeting nature, as the word means lasting for a short time.

"We see Ephemeral as an opportunity to celebrate our journeys through beautiful artwork that fades as we unfold," Sakhai says. "If there's one thing we know for sure, it's that we will change. Hairstyles, clothing choices, music taste, jobs these all evolve as we move through our own lives."

Tattoo prices range from $175 to $450. At this time, Ephemeral only offers small to medium size tattoos, and the only color available is black. However, there are plans to add color inks in the future. "Ephemeral tattoos are applied by real tattoo artists with real tattoo machinery, Liu says. Like traditional tattoos, Ephemeral tattoos are applied through an intrusive process in which the ink is being applied into the dermis layer by breaking open the skin. Clients are encouraged to design their pieces, and Ephemeral offers one-on-one consultations for clients who need help deciding. "The entire Ephemeral experience is centered around giving an authentic tattoo experience without any of the intimidation or pressure."

"We take aftercare seriously and have done extensive research into supplies and processes to best heal tattoos, Sakhai says, some of which are used in conventional tattoo aftercare." Clients receive aftercare goodie bags at the end of their appointments with products curated to ensure their tattoos heal beautifully within a period of around four-to-six weeks, roughly the same amount of time it takes a traditional tattoo to heal. Like traditional tattooing, clients can expect some redness, irritation and itchiness while their skin heals.

Sakhai views Ephemeral as the stepping stone clients can take before deciding on getting a permanent tattoo and a way to try pieces before making the final commitment. "For most of our clients, Ephemeral is the first introduction to the tattoo experience, he says. One thing we commonly hear in the studio is, wow, I'd love to get that permanently. This is one of the ways that Ephemeral benefits the tattoo industry by bringing in new clients who previously never would have gotten a permanent tattoowe're effectively breaking the tattoo seal."

Liu and Sakhai are incredibly proud of the inclusivity their space provides for clients new to getting tattoos. "The entire Ephemeral experience is centered around giving an authentic tattoo experience without any of the intimidation or pressure," Liu explains. "Ephemeral was an opportunity to address this question and redirect the future of the tattoo industry by creating a new category of tattoos expanding the industry to make it more inclusive and approachable to everyone, including those who were previously turned off by the idea of permanence."

In the age of COVID, Ephemeral has ensured their artists' and clients' health and safety are their top priorities. "Our team goes above and beyond CDC recommendations and government guidelines to ensure we provide a safe experience for all," Liu says. In addition to regular deep cleanings, the studio is currently working within an appointment-only model, and tattoos occur in private booths. Ephemeral's artists get routinely tested for COVID. Clients are required to sign a COVID contract and exposure form before their appointments with a temperature check when they arrive. Masks are also worn at all times.

"Now more than ever, the world needs authentic forms of self-expression and inspiring experiences," Liu explains. "We've observed that being able to enter a new world for an hour or two to experience something as deeply personal as getting a tattoo is the retreat many people are craving. And unlike merchant retail, service retail cannot be fulfilled with digital."

Although the studio has only been open since March, Liu expects to have plenty of clients return for more tattoos in the future. "Whether it's the made-to-fade ink, the incredible artists, the inclusive culture, or the beautiful space, we're grateful to be the first to offer made-to-fade ink to the world."

While their tattoos will fade, Ephemeral is anything but temporary. The team plan to expand beyond their Williamsburg location in the future, looking at their clients' demands to scout their next locations based on where clients are placing their reservations."We view Ephemeral as a global brand, Liu says. And we are committed to realizing our vision of a world where everybody is a canvas for limitless self-expression."

HYDERABAD : Abbas Razvi got inked for the first time when he was 18 he got his spine tattooed and there was no looking back ever since. The 33-year-old sound engineer now has a little over 20 tattoos, big and small, all over his body. Honestly speaking, hes lost count.

His body is a canvas which boasts of art works by artists from across the world New Zealand, Germany and the renowned Paul Booth from the US. I got my first tattoo when I was in New Zealand. In the initial phases, I was addicted to getting more but there was a long break after I returned to India. I was a bit finicky about the hygiene and quality of equipment here.

But after a few years, I finally found a good studio in Hyderabad. I think Ive lost count of how many I have now, says Abbas, who has already decided what his next tattoo is going to be. Its an illustration based on a song by his band Godless, which has been designed by an Indonesian artist.

Is getting tattooed addictive? Is it the adrenalin rush you feel while the needle injects ink into the layers of your dermis that makes you desire for more? Or is it the plain simple urge to chronicle your lifes events and milestones?

Tattoo artists in Hyderabad say its a mixed bag of reasons and feelings. For Subhojit Chakroborty, who has his studio, Koru Ink, at Ramgopalpet, it is definitely addictive but very subjective. A tattoo helps you express who you are and people connect with the art in various ways spiritually, artistically, some relate to the pain, while some are just collectors who love to get inked by different artists from all over the world, he says.

But there is more to this, he says: Pain is our greatest teacher and once you conquer it, you rise up and see things from a higher perspective. That pain is a temporary part of the process which makes you learn to trust yourself and your body. Theres a lot more to this addiction, which is happening at deeper levels.

According to artist Amin Sultan Hajiani, the reason is simple: people compliment you on your tattoo, which makes you want to beautify your body some more. You go to your artist with an idea and he executes it well. You love the design, it makes you feel great and now you cant stop thinking of going back to him for more,he says.

Pinku Bijoy Ghosh of Inkkraft Tattoos in Banjara Hills has a different take on this. Our lives keep evolving, we go through so many incidents and we want to remember some important ones. Some of us capture these moments in the form of a tattoo. Its a beautiful experience which begins right from the time you share an idea with your artist till the time your tattoo heals. The amount of brainstorming that happens between the artist and the client is possible only when there is trust and a certain comfort level. Once you build this bond with your artist, you keep going back to him/her for more designs because you know theyll do a great job, he says.

Sridevi Addepalli, a mother of two who lives in Lingampally, is someone who captures her lifes moments and milestones by getting inked. She got her first tattoo 15 years ago in Bali a rose with thorns on her nape. I wanted my first tattoo to reflect my personality I am beautiful and delicate but can also be fierce. My second tattoo was dedicated to my pets. I got five paws on my ankle, one each for all the dogs Ive had in the last 39 years, she says as she plans her next design to mark her motherhood.

So heres a disclaimer, no one can get inked just once, and tattoos dont give you cancer! Go to a hygienic studio and brainstorm your idea with your artist because that piece of art is going with you to your grave.

Lets debunk some myths about tattoos

Tattoos give you cancer and HIVIt does not give you cancer, says tattoo artist Amin. The scientific community has not established a link between tattoos and cancer yet. As far as HIV goes, just go to a studio which is licensed and hygienic. Make sure your artist uses disposable needles, gloves, fresh ink and the environment is steralised.

You bleed a lot This was true back in the day. But now, with sophisticated needles and guns, you hardly bleed. But if your artist pierces the needle too deep into your skin, you might end up bleeding and the tattoo will look a mess. Choose your artist wisely, do your research about him/her.

You can erase a tattoo with laserYes you can, but its not easy. Firstly, it hurts a lot! Secondly, there will be some amount of irreparable damage to the skin. Finally, youd have to shell out big money for it. In short, you may be able to erase the tattoo but the world will know that you had one, thanks to the scarring.

A TATTOO artist who turned to fine art watercolour painting during lockdown to pay the bills has seen her beautiful masterpieces snapped up by collectors across the globe.

Becca Millerchip-Brown, the owner of tattoo studio Freakshow, in Newbury, West Berkshire, has covered 95 per cent of her body in ink - but not everyones a fan of her look, with the single mum admitting people think theyre better than me or treat like her like shes stupid.

With tattoo parlours forced to close for much of the past year, Becca, who lives with her two teenage boys, in Wroughton, Wiltshire, built up a reputation as an animal and nature painter.

She began painting every day, taking photographs of nature on her daily walks, which became her inspiration.

Becca was surprised at the interest in her fine art and now vows to continue painting even after reopening her studio, despite being spoken down to by people in the art world about her eye-catching array of body art.

The defiant mum proudly displays her fine art alongside tattoo pics on her Instagram page as she sees both as serious artwork, just different mediums.

The 44-year-old said: I've had both positive and negative reactions because I am pretty covered in tattoos. People Ive met in the art world who are 'eccentric rich' love my appearance.

The negative reactions Ive had are from the wannabe middle class who think they're better simply because they chose to conform to a standard in their appearance.

There are people who have an initial opinion of me based on my tattoos and how I look who speak to me in a very condescending way, who are surprised when I can respond in a reasonably articulate manner.

I do find it quite funny. I put my paintings alongside my tattoo work because to me it's all art just different mediums.

The only part of Beccas body which isnt tattooed is her face, although she does have inks under her hair.

She said: When people have asked how many tattoos I have, I normally say one because they all join up.

Most of the time I get positive reactions, people stop and say nice tattoos. I have heard little children say: That lady has pretty flowers on her and things like that.

In the summer people do stare, but I've noticed it more when I've been on holiday abroad. Ive even been asked to have my photo taken with people on holiday simply because of the amount of tattoos I have.

My look definitely coincides with my shop name Freakshow when people think you're a freak or oddity in a sideshow. I do understand why, because it is unusual to have as many as I do, especially for a female.

Becca has owned her studio Freakshow for almost a decade and its a real extension of her personality.

Freakshows were a popular form of entertainment during the Victorian period, when people flocked to gawp at unusual, novel acts.

This theme runs throughout the interior of Beccas studio, with walls covered in murals and prints from the era, displayed taxidermy, a hall of mirrors on the stairway and candy carnival stripes on the banisters.

The artist has attempted to tattoo herself before, but it didnt go to plan, and instead travels far and wide across the UK to get inked by tattooists she admires.

Becca had her first tattoo underage at just 15 - a scorpion, which she soon had covered up because she didn't like it. That early mistake made her think very carefully about her future tatts and their meanings.

Her favourites include aportrait of Cary Grant and Deborah Kerr from the film 'An Affair to Remember' as she used to watch old movies with her grandmother.

She has a mayfly on her leg because her dad once told her that the insect only lives for one day, so it's a reminder to live each day to your fullest potential.

Daffodils on Becca's legs are for her mum because they're her favourite flower, and a cup of tea, also on her leg, was chosen because her parents love a cuppa.

She has a lady playing a violin on her leg because her eldest son plays the violin and an owl her youngest drew.

She said: It's pretty much a struggle to find any gaps now, I'm so very covered. I will fill in any gaps with more tattoos but it's annoying that I can't get any larger pieces anymore.

"I love art so much and have paintings and art all around my home, so I see this as a similar thing."

Becca has been interested in art from a young age; shed miss lessons at school so she could attend extra art lessons, going on to study art at college, followed by a fine art degree at De Montfort University, gaining a 2:1.

Shes exhibited at the Royal Academy in Edinburgh, sold a painting at Bond Street Sothebys, has had artwork on display at art festivals and sold commissions locally before getting into tattooing.

Before the pandemic, tattooing provided her biggest income, but she hopes to continue fine art painting more regularly after her shop opens on Monday.

Becca said: This past year has been a real struggle mentally and financially, especially as a single mum-of-two. Suddenly being told your only source of income isnt allowed to continue, Ive had to adapt.

All this made me determined to keep myself productive and paint daily. I need a shop to go back to which has meant keeping up with payments there and also at home.

During lockdown Ive had commissions both locally across the UK and abroad including Denmark, France and America.

I have painted a lot of pets, mainly dogs, cats, but also guinea pigs, a pet chicken and a pet goat. Lots of wild animals and flowers too. Nature is what I truly love painting and drawing and lockdown walks have kept me inspired.

I'm used to drawing daily for tattoos as all my tattoo work is uniquely designed for each client so the artwork side of it goes hand in hand.

The daughter of a rock legend and a pioneering businesswoman, Amy Leavell Bransford forged her own path with trailblazing Aviary Beauty + Wellness and SparrowHawk Studio, both located at Studioplex in Old Fourth Ward. With a second location of Aviary opening in Summerhill this June, we talked to Bransford about growing up in a famous family, meeting David Bowie, and her mission to create space for artists who color outside the lines. And, of course, we got her eclectic Spotify Playlist (listen below) filled with new and classic tunes.

Q. Aviary was a trailblazer on Intowns spa scene. Can you reflect on your decision to open the shop and its growth after more than a decade in business?A. When I opened in 2009 it was a response to the fact that I didnt fit into the mold of the typical Atlanta spa. I had experience working in a local day spa that was very Zen with a water feature and New Age music and that wasnt me. The other option was very clinical, like a doctors office. When I found my 1,100 square foot studio in Old Fourth Ward, I knew it was home. The space is very rustic, industrial and the history of the building really spoke to me. The courtyard entry with all of the fruit trees and vines makes Studioplex one of Atlantas most unique buildings that has always been home to creative residents and businesses. I opened a boutique tattoo studio there in 2017, SparrowHawk Studio. Again, it was a response to there not being a place for artists to work who felt like they didnt fit into the mold of the typical shop. I am very proud of that; we are a collective of Misfit Toys. Now, I am expanding Aviary Beauty + Wellness to a second location in Summerhill. I guess we just keep going to try to provide jobs for people who want to color outside the lines.

Q. Your mom, Rose Lane Leavell, ran a successful boutique in Macon for a quarter of a century. What did she teach you about running your own business?A. I literally grew up in moms shop, Cornucopia, which was Macons most fashion forward boutique. She opened it when I was 2. Mom was carrying lines like Betsy Johnson many years before it was a department store brand. Going on shopping trips with Mom to Atlanta and New York taught me to look for brands that are unique and not ubiquitous, which I do for my own business today. Growing up in a woman-owned business, whose clientele were also mostly women and trans women, influenced me a lot. Macon also had an underground trans and drag scene at the Pegasus Lounge until it burned in the 1980s, and many of them shopped for their gowns and apparel at Cornucopia. So being a child of my parents exposed me to a lot of experiences that shaped who I am today.

Q. Your dad, keyboardist Chuck Leavell, is a familiar name to anyone who loves the Allman Brothers and Rolling Stones. How did growing up in a musical household inspire you?A. My Dad moved away from his hometown of Tuscaloosa, AL as a teenager to go to Muscle Shoals and play on soul records, which was a shocking thing to do at the time. This was all with the civil rights movement happening in the background. When I stop to think about that sometimes, I think how punk that was for the era. He later moved to Macon and met my mom, who worked for the record label. So, they were OG it couple in the early 1970s. I also worked for Capricorn Records as a publicist to bands like Cake and Widespread Panic when they moved to Atlanta in the 90s. Having the experience of growing up in a musical family and then later having the experience of working with the Walden family really shaped me. Phil Walden [co-founder of Capricorn] was a legend, and I got to work outside his office every day.

Q. Okay, you have to dish on at least one cool celebrity encounter.A. My favorite one ever is David Bowie. It was during a Rolling Stones tour in the 90s when backstage of every concert was a whos who of celebrity A List. I saw Dad talking with Bowie across the room and walked over to inject myself into the conversation for a forced introduction. He was such a kind man he asked me a lot of questions about myself with genuine, even if pretend, interest. Im not sure whether Bowie tried to elevate me to his level or he met me at mine, but its a thing I think about a lot in relationships. Meeting people where they are is something I strive for.

Q. What song or album is on constant repeat these days?A. The first song on my playlist is Wildfires from the band Sault. This is probably my favorite stye of music. Also, I love Cherry Glazer. My husband [Steve] and kids went to Pappy & Harriets for lunch on a visit to Joshua Tree in 2018 and they were performing. I have been pretty obsessed ever since. My kids, Rocco and Miles, are 12 and 15 and in their own music discovery right now. They are delving into bands like Gorillaz, Radiohead and Tame Impala. I loved Brit pop so it has been fun to rediscover Damon Albarn music with them. I also remember doing the same thing with my parents records when I was their age, except it was REMs Murmur or Jimi Hendrixs Electric Ladyland.

So you want to get a tattoo. Turns out you're not alone.

According to McCrindle Research, the number of Australians sporting ink hit a record high in 2020, with one in four tattooed. That's up from 20 per cent in 2018 and 19 per cent in 2016.

If you're a cleanskin who's keen to make a mark but unsure what image you want decorating your body, let alone who you should let loose with a tattoo needle, it can all seem pretty daunting.

Luke "Fonzy" Warren has been a full-time tattoo artist for more than a decade and estimates he's done tens of thousands of tattoos in that time. Experience has taught him that tattoo artists all do things differently because everyone has an individual approach.

"One of the main things about being tattooed by a person is the experience you have," he says. "Choose the artist you want to be tattooed by. I do realism. If someone wants a traditional piece, I'll send them to another artist in town because they're the best person for the job."

While once upon a time, you'd walk into a tattoo studio, and there'd be a binder on the counter displaying the artist's work. Nowadays, tattoo artists use social media as their portfolio, so it's the best place to start when you begin your research.

Once you've settled on a tattooist whose work you love, book an appointment and then be patient. "I have people say they want a tattoo tomorrow, but I'm booked out for six months," says Warren, warning that if you find an artist who can tattoo you on the day, there's probably a reason, and you're likely to be unhappy with the result. "It's not something you can scrub off the next day, and tattoo removal is very painful," he says.

Speaking of pain, it's not always the case that tattooing a fleshier canvas will hurt less than a bony one. "In reality, you're still working near the same nerve endings," says Warren. "All tattoos hurt, and everybody takes pain differently. Some people talk, some go quiet and put headphones on - it's whatever makes you comfortable, and it's about us making you comfortable as well."

One of the main things about being tattooed by a person is the experience you have.

That said, Warren points out that your job can also play a part; tradespeople who frequently bang their arms or chefs who are exposed to burns in the kitchen, for example, tend to have a higher pain threshold.

When it comes to choosing a tattoo design, it's best to work with your chosen tattooist. "Sometimes people say, 'Do what you want'," Warren says. "Let's say you want a dragon. I might do a really evil dragon because I think that's cool. But you wanted a majestic dragon. That would be a big waste of time."

Warren says many clients only have a rough idea, such as "a dragon", and over time he has learnt to profile people - extremely helpful when it comes to creating the artwork beforehand.

Warren's moral compass has given him firm thoughts regarding tattoo placement, especially on the uninitiated. "There are definitely designs and placement you don't necessarily do for your first tattoo," he says. "If someone came to me wanting their hands tattooed, I would say no. That is an unrecoverable place, and because it's your first tattoo you don't know what it's like to be judged by people. It's something you have to earn."

Expect the price to vary depending on the tattoo artist - it could be based on the size of the piece or cost by the hour or days required. Also, be prepared to fill out a consent form before you get it done and have your ID ready (legislation on the minimum age varies across states and territories).

After you've been inked, it'll be wrapped in cling wrap to protect what is essentially an open wound - you don't want to knock it accidentally. Warren sends his clients off with aftercare products, together with a written (and verbal) list of dos and don'ts.

You'll need to apply the recommended ointment or cream on your new tattoo up to three times a day for about a fortnight to help your skin heal, by which time you'll no doubt be primed to flaunt your new pride and joy.

The practice of inking one's skin has a complex history, and like other forms of art, its own set of cultural traditions and ephemera, including early tools, historical paintings and ethnographic photographs, and more recently, illustrations of designs -- called "flash sheets" -- by famous living artists.

And, like fine art, tattooing has its own market for such objects, as well as its own museums. The Daredevil Museum in New York City and San Francisco's Lyle Tuttle Tattoo Studio and Museum -- named after the legendary tattoo artist and celebrity favorite, who in his time inked the likes of Cher and Janis Joplin -- are just a couple of examples.

Dutch tattoo artist Henk Schiffmacher, whose past clients include Lady Gaga, Kurt Cobain and Keith Haring, said in a recent video interview that the internet has created a whole new audience for ink.

"Everybody all of a sudden wants to make a little museum... or is diving into the history of tattoo," said Schiffmacher, whose personal collection of some 40,000 objects and artworks related to tattoos, one of the world's largest, is featured in the new book "Tattoo. 1730s-1970s. Henk Schiffmacher's Private Collection."

His collection includes Japanese woodblock prints of tattooed 19th-century Kabuki characters; tattoo chisels made of wood and bones from the early 1900s; posters and black-and-white photographs of tattooed women at traveling carnivals; and an endless number of designs from over the centuries.

"There are a lot of serious collectors now," Schiffmacher, who has been tattooing since the 1970s, said of tattoo ephemera. "And that's a good part of the internet -- that we are able to see what other people have. It's become a very different ball game."

Schiffmacher briefly housed his collection -- the Schiffmacher Tattoo Heritage -- in the brick-and-mortar Amsterdam Tattoo Museum, before it closed due to financial reasons. His home, which he shares with his wife and business partner Louise van Teylingen, is now filled with his treasures from different points in history, including the rise of tattooing during Japan's Edo period, the 19th-century tribal tattoos of the Indigenous Mori, and the proliferation of modern parlors in the West following World War II.

"I am what I call the poor man's Rembrandt. (Tattooing) is the art of the common man," he said. "It's not like a highly intellectual type of thing. It's very easy to read, and it has symbols for you. A simple tattoo -- a person with an anchor or with a heart or with a rose -- is communication."

A lifelong collector

Schiffmacher, whose father was a butcher, became interested in collecting tattoo art before becoming an artist himself. As he recalls in his book, he has considered himself a "magpie" of sorts since childhood, when he amassed flints and arrowheads and birds' eggs, hanging a sign on the door to his room that read, "My Museum."

Born in 1952 in the small Dutch city of Harderwijk, Schiffmacher traveled to Amsterdam in his early 20s, where he befriended renowned artist Tattoo Peter. At the same time, he was nurturing a new interest in photography, particularly Diane Arbus's black-and-white portraits of so-called "eccentrics," which included heavily tattooed people. Schiffmacher began seeking out strangers to photograph, and one man in particular who spent his nights at local watering holes caught his attention.

"He was really an extreme drunk," Sciffmacher said. "He had all these fantastic tattoos. And although he didn't have good communication because of his alcohol problem, he communicated so much when I looked at the little slides (I had taken of him), and saw all these tattoos. The tattoos tell little bits of this man's life."

"In the early '70s, tattooing in Holland was quite exceptional, especially (for) people with a lot of tattoos. You wouldn't see them too much," Schiffmacher said. "So it's not like today; the whole world is tattooed now. But in those days, you really had to know the person to try to find them."

Schiffmacher started corresponding with other artists, exchanging his photographs for their drawings. When he began tattooing shortly after, he traveled to other countries extensively to be inked by his contemporaries. He visited their shops and traded art and scoured local antique shops for new finds.

As his reputation as an artist and collector of tattoo memorabilia grew, rare works, objects and tip-offs began finding their way to him. (During the interview with Schiffmacher, van Teylingen joined to show a new package they had just received with tattoo designs from an unknown artist.)

From shops to museums

Museums have also come calling to borrow parts of Schiffmacher's collection, including Amsterdam's Tropenmuseum and the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles. Some of his objects have traveled with the exhibition that opened as "Tatoueurs, Tatous" ("Tattooists, Tattooed") at the Muse du Quai Branly Jacques Chirac in Paris in 2015, which touched down at the Royal Ontario Museum in Toronto and The Field Museum Chicago, among others.

He called it "an intense experience." (The head has since been returned to New Zealand and is housed at the national museum, known as "Te Papa," according to Schiffmacher.)

"Tattoos communicate in the same way whether you're alive or dead, so for many Mori, being confronted with one of these heads is like having an ancestor talk to them," he explained.

Today, Schiffmacher still considers his tattoos to be a form of communication that has given him access he would have never otherwise had.

"It is a passport into different cultures," he said. "I have been to all kinds of situations in the world (where my tattoos) made the introduction.

"And that's what tattoos are: an invitation to communicate with someone else," he added.

A Conversation With Medusa Tattoo Studio: COVID-19 and Ithaca…

The COVID-19 pandemic has changed the nature of every industry and field imaginable. To better understand how COVID-19 has impacted the function of our local tattoo shops, I spoke to Carol Oddy of Medusa Tattoo Studio.

During the pandemic, one of the changes Oddy noticed has been the significant decrease in traffic to the studio. Oddy explained, We used to do walk-ins, we used to be open to the public Now we dont do that anymore A lot of our consultations are done by email or phone or Zoom. Oddy also mentioned how the studio has a gallery space, where they used to host art shows from local artists. Now, that space is closed off, as no one other than clients with appointments comes to visit the shop.

However, having the shop closed to the public has kept Medusa Tattoo Studio quiet in a good way, allowing them to focus solely on tattooing while they see their clients. We dont answer the phone anymore while we are tattooing. So there are no interruptions It keeps us focused and its great for the customers because they dont have to keep taking breaks. Even after the pandemic dies down, Oddy hopes they can maintain that structure or hire someone to work the counter so they can continue to give artists the freedom to focus on tattooing without outside interruptions.

Beyond that, Oddy explained that Medusa Tattoos did not need to change many of their practices in order to comply with CDC recommendations. We require people to wear masks and disinfect everything between customers We didnt have to change much of the day-to-day routine because its all done in a way to minimize cross-contamination. Oddy discussed how whenever there is a large health crisis, people tend to blame tattoo shops or view them as unsafe and unhygienic a Hepatitis B outbreak in 1961 that led to a 37-year ban on tattooing. However, with the COVID-19 pandemic, it appears that tattoo shops have largely escaped that stereotype; shops emphasis on maintaining a strong standard of cleanliness and avoiding cross-contamination has helped them have a smoother transition into a world governed by CDC COVID-19 guidelines.

One thing that has changed, however, is the workload for tattoo artists. While Medusa Tattoo Studio has the same demand for tattoos as before the pandemic, they have less time to fulfill requests. We are basically working reduced hours because we have to keep the numbers down. Its one or the other of us in the front station and one of us in the back station, instead of being able to have 3 people working at once. This strain is only increased by the need to schedule an appointment through emails and phone calls that cant be answered during work hours. As a result, there is a long waitlist of people looking to get tattooed. On behalf of most tattoo artists, if people are wanting to get tattoos, just be patient with us because we are all restricted in how much work we can do. We are literally working half the hours but the same amount of people are still calling.

While the pandemic has put a lot of strain on tattoo shops, tattoo artists resilience and adaptability have allowed them to step up to the challenge and continue spreading their art through dedicated clients.

In the early 70s, tattooing in Holland was quite exceptional, especially (for) people with a lot of tattoos. You wouldnt see them too much, Schiffmacher said. So its not like today; the whole world is tattooed now. But in those days, you really had to know the person to try to find them.

Museums have also come calling to borrow parts of Schiffmachers collection, including Amsterdams Tropenmuseum and the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles. Some of his objects have traveled with the exhibition that opened as Tatoueurs, Tatous (Tattooists, Tattooed) at the Muse du Quai Branly Jacques Chirac in Paris in 2015, which touched down at the Royal Ontario Museum in Toronto and The Field Museum Chicago, among others.

Similar to recent controversies involving art and natural history museums regarding artifacts that were stolen from colonized lands, the tattoo world has had its own reckoning with how some objects were acquired. Tattooed skin has been traded and exhibited, and Schiffmacher says its not uncommon for some people to donate their own inked skin for exhibition after their death.

However, not all such artifacts have been willingly given. Over the past decade, for example, institutions like the American Museum of Natural History and the Smithsonian have repatriated parts of their collections of Mori human remains, including preserved heads, or mokomokai, which feature extensive facial tattoos. According to his book, Schiffmacher himself accompanied tattoo artist Gordon Toi and actor Cliff Curtis, both of Mori descent, in the early 2000s to recover a mokomokai from a Parisian art dealer.

He called it an intense experience. (The head has since been returned to New Zealand and is housed at the national museum, known as Te Papa, according to Schiffmacher.)

Tattoos communicate in the same way whether youre alive or dead, so for many Mori, being confronted with one of these heads is like having an ancestor talk to them, he explained.

Today, Schiffmacher still considers his tattoos to be a form of communication that has given him access he would have never otherwise had.

It is a passport into different cultures, he said. I have been to all kinds of situations in the world (where my tattoos) made the introduction.

And thats what tattoos are: an invitation to communicate with someone else, he added.
